Après la Pluie – A Visual Poetry Collection
about.
I had the pleasure of designing Après la pluie, a self-published poetry collection that placed strong emphasis on print quality and visual clarity. The project covered the full scope of design—from interior layout to cover and illustration concept. Guided by a minimalist aesthetic, I used fine lines, dots, and a striking red-and-black palette to echo the emotional rhythm of the poems. The result is more than just a book—it’s a carefully crafted object that blurs the line between poetry collection and art piece.
challenge.
This was the poet’s debut publication, and each of the thirty poems needed its own visual response—subtle enough to let the text speak, but expressive enough to deepen the experience. We explored two very different design directions: one in line with the author’s original vision, and a second, more daring visual language. The latter, with its bolder, more contemporary tone, resonated deeply with the poet and set the course for the rest of the project. From that point on, we worked closely to ensure every illustration served the poem it accompanied—emotionally, rhythmically, and spatially.
process.
Creating Après la pluie was a collaborative journey built on clear communication and a shared creative vision. We began with a detailed conversation to align expectations and explore the author’s visual preferences—laying the groundwork for a strong partnership.
From there, I presented two distinct design directions: one rooted in the author's initial ideas, and a second, more experimental route. The bolder concept resonated deeply and became the foundation of the book’s visual identity.
Each of the thirty poems was then paired with a custom illustration, developed through an iterative process of feedback and refinement. The evolving red tone used throughout became a subtle symbol of emotional growth and cohesion. Once illustrations and layout were finalized, the book was carefully prepared for print—down to the last detail.
testimonial.
Janet did a fabulous job. She took the time to listen to my needs, was clear and precise in her recommendations while remaining open to the exchange of ideas. She was always available and responsive. This was my first time working with a designer, and she exceeded my expectations. I wouldn't hesitate to work with Janet again in the future.”
